About Echuca/Moama, home of the Paddle Steamer Hero

Resting on the fertile fringes of the mighty Murray River, are the historic towns of Echuca and Moama. Both towns made famous through time for their rich maritime heritage. Echuca was once a thriving inland shipping port during the 18th century, possessing a wharf that stretched over 1/4 of a mile long with ship building yards established in Moama. Some 200 Paddle Steamers were built at Echuca and Moama.

Today, many historic buildings remain including the heritage listed Wharf and heritage listed Steam Packet Inn Hotel. Complemented by the worlds largest collection of genuine Murray River Paddle Steamers still operating and regularly conducting cruise excursions.

Hero and Paddle Steamer Adelaide are 2 of the oldest boats. In fact, the Paddle Steamer Adelaide is the 2nd oldest Paddle Steamer in the world, built in 1866 (Echuca) and Hero later built in 1874 (also built at Echuca).

Modern Echuca and Moama represent friendly & welcoming country hospitality, with an abundance of cafes and fine dining restaurants. These include the award winning Oscar W`s Redgum Grill & Deck Bar, and Hero cruising restaurant. To name a few; The Southern 80 Ski Race, Jazz food & wine festivals, heritage steam weekends, Murray River Red Cross Canoe Marathon, Vintage Engine & Steam rally, Easter Paddle Steamer Sail Past, as well as regular weekend markets and cultural events displaying fresh locally grown produce and local talents.

Echuca and Moama enjoy more sunny days than most other parts of the country and offer a multitude of water based activities including; water skiing, canoeing, fishing, river cruises, boat hire, house boats, swimming and more.

Finding accommodation is no problem with both towns possessing a selection of fine Motels, Caravan Parks, Houseboats and Bed & Breakfast (B&B`s). The Steampacket Inn is one Bed & Breakfast that really stands out. Located in the historic Port Precinct, the Steampacket Inn dates back to the 1850`s and overlooks the historic Wharf and Murray River. Today, this historic hotel is set up as a boutique B&B that is family friendly and truly worth an inspection.
